What to Expect from the Next Brazilian Crop?

A Quick Walk-through ‘Quality, Quantity & Price’

Quality

The quality of the beans is very good, thanks to ideal weather conditions.
There was an appropriate amount of rainfall during the flowering period (September/October 2021), and excellent rainfall levels were recorded in early 2022, allowing for satisfactory bean growth.

Quantity

Due to frost and drought in 2021, Arabica numbers will be lower than originally estimated. However, the harvest is 21% larger than the 2021/2022 harvest.
The 2022/2023 harvest is ‘on cycle’, meaning it’s a higher yielding year, and we expect around 63 to 64 million bags.
Within the same farm, we noticed trees with full cherries and others with 10% less. Regions have also been affected in different ways, south of Minas was more affected by temperature fluctuations, whilst temperatures in Cerrado were more stable.

Price

Internal coffee prices skyrocketed in 2021; in the last quarter, there was even (as a result of the NY market rise) a price doubling.
This price-point shift allowed farmers to achieve good margins -even with lower production (after all, the frost had affected the size of the crop).
But also in Brazil (just like in Europe), they have to contend with significant inflation:
– the price of fertilizers increased by 60%
– the price of fuel (for vehicles and machines) increased by 40%,
logistic costs increased by 22%,
– it is extremely difficult to find workers, and even temporary workers who are engaged in harvesting activities cost now 30% more than the previous harvest.
On a positive note, some exporters managed to finetune or intensify their selective mechanical harvesting, which has helped a lot to mitigate the effects and high costs of labour shortages.
