KILIMANJARO WATER AND FOOD FOR ALL

By increasing water efficiency and reducing risks along the coffee & food value chains, Kilimanjaro Water & Food for All will improve living conditions for 2,700+ families. It deploys an innovative, comprehensive and scalable model for water management & regenerative agriculture to speed productivity recovery, secure rural water and maize seeds supply, reducing CO2 emissions through best irrigation and water use practices linked to water stewardship in 2 farms in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

PROMOTION OF AND EDUCATION FOR HEALTHY SCHOOL CHILDREN ∙ FOLLOW-UP

The overall objective of this project is to improve the quality of life of 150 students in El Pinal, Copan, Honduras.
This through education, adding new nutritional components to the school lunch menu, improving the conditions of the kitchen area and tools of the school lunch, implementing a sustainable school garden as well as educational and corrective actions in hygienic habits, de-parasitizing and the provision of vitamin supplements.

HEALTHY HOMES IN OLOPA, CHIQUIMULA

This project's objective is to improve the living conditions and health of 85 smallholder coffee families in El Bendito and Los Vasquez of Olopa Guatemala, through the implementation of 116 housing solutions in 3 years' time. This will include smokeless stoves, concrete floors, rainwater harvesting systems and reinforcement capacities through capacity building training.

A NEW GENERATION OF COFFEE ENTREPRENEURS, COMMITTED TO PRODUCTIVITY AND QUALITY

The project aims to continue impacting the coffee regions of the Santander department in Colombia, encouraging 100 young students from rural schools to establish coffee crops based on productivity, profitability and quality criteria; coffee crops with adequate agronomic management that allow developing scalable and sustainable coffee enterprises.

At the Las Flores Coffee School in Santa Rosa, Guatemala, 4 students are trained to graduate with a Coffee High School diploma and to become agents of economic and social development. Leadership and entrepreneurial training, with respect for spirituality and cultural identity are key pillars in the curriculum.

The overarching goal of this project is to promote quality education and long-term opportunities for 159 youngsters and children in the El Platanillo community in San Marcos, Guatemala. By graduating more youngsters with a good education level and by promoting the use of technological devices, increased access to matching job opportunities is stimulated.

A NEW GENERATION OF COFFEE ENTREPRENEURS

In several regions in Santander, Colombia, the project aims to provide better better perspectives for the young coffee growers community. 150 young coffee growers will become regional and national models of rural entrepreneurship. 150 coffee plantations will stand out for their profitability and sustainability and will be known as 'model coffee farms'.

ALDEA CERTIFICATION AS A PILOT MODEL WITH RURAL YOUTH

The overall objective of this project is to develop a unified, economically feasible model for certification = ALDEA Certification model, led by a network of 30 youngsters, all sons and daughters of coffee entrepreneurs and members of Aldea Global Cooperative.
This will be a new, low cost model for certification that can be replicated in any other Latin American country.

BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COFFEE DRYING BEDS IN FERO COFFEE FARMERS COOPERATIVE

The core objective of the project is to build cost-effective and environment-friendly new coffee drying beds. The project will be implemented in one of the three washing stations of the cooperative and could be replicated on a larger scale should it prove to be successful.

COCOA AGROFORESTRY PRACTICES

The project focuses on the creating tree nurseries to improve cocoa plantations with shade. Furthermore, trees also attract bees, which stimulate pollination.

COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION PROJECT

In Matagalpa and Jinotega in Nicaragua, we support grant scholarships to children from coffee farmers in nine cooperatives. Cecocafen scholarship program has given access to education to many young boys and girls. In return, Cecocafen asks scholarship students to get involved in their cooperatives.

This project's objective is to update school equipment and help students gain autonomy by teaching them how to use applications (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint...) using portable computers.

DISASTER RELIEF ETA X IOTA TROPICAL STORMS: FOOD AND HYGIENE KITS

After hurricane ETA, a second hurricane IOTA (category 5 storm) hit Central America in November 2020. The combination of this recent emergency and the COVID-19 pandemic context increased the risk of the most vulnerable families. Besides infrastructure damage, this was a real concern just a few weeks before the coffee harvest season would kick in.
The overall objective of this project is the assistance of 70 coffee farming families affected by the tropical storms in El Progreso, La Unión, Zacapa, Guatemala.

The project focuses on the implementation of good agricultural practices and certification standards, good governance and management, empowering the cooperatives to improve the living conditions of coffee farmers and stimulate the development of the surrounding society.

EMPOWERMENT VIA VERIFICATION

In Peru, in the Province San Ignacio, Cajamarca, two coffee associations are verified to operate according to the C.A.F.E. Practices Code of Conduct. Certification process starts with comprehensive training for growers. During such trainings, farmers learn how to properly sort, dry and ferment the coffee beans to improve coffee quality.

IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF DRINKING WATER

In Jinotega, Matagalpa, Boaco, Nueva Segovia and Esteli the project aims to distribute water filters and provide drinking water to women as an initiative of women helping other women. Safe and clean drinking water prevents a lot of diseases so the Women’s Coffee Alliance wants to encourage the women to use the filters given as a preventive tool of infection diseases.

In Matagalpa and Jinotega we support Lending credits to members of Cecocafen. Credit and saving funds are managed by women in their organizations. (Board of Directors, composed of three democratically elected women.) Women are trained on how to keep records (manage) and register credits and savings.

In recent years, access to financing for working capital has decreased and the effort that small producers have made to maintain their plantations and guarantee food for their families becomes increasingly difficult.

SPANISH TRANSLATION OF COFFEE GUIDE

We support worldwide coffee education thanks to the Coffee Guide written to be used by growers, processors, traders, exporters, coffee associations and people involved in transport, finance, quality control, certification and other sectors related to coffee in producing countries. The Spanish version received voluntary technical support from over 100 coffee personalities, organizations and companies. The Coffee Guide has been used as a resource in many seminars and workshops organized by ITC.

SPECIAL EMERGENCY PROJECT ∙ FUEGO VOLCANO ERUPTION DISASTER RESPONSE

On June 3rd 2018, the Fuego Volcano erupted in Guatemala, mainly affecting coffee regions. As a response to this volcano eruption and its consequences, we initiated a special emergency Volcano project together with Habitat for Humanity Guatemala (HFHG) to provide structural support for the families that needed to be re-allocated by contributing in the construction of their homes, bringing them hope for the future.
The overall objective of this project is the assistance of coffee farming families affected by the volcano eruption in Valle de las Flores, Palin, Esquintla, Guatemala.

The long-term financial success and well-being of any family begins with a good health. In Santa Rosa and Jalapa, Guatemala, this project provides about 370 coffee farmer partner families with water filters, having a direct positive impact on their daily lives.

This project addresses main weaknesses in the coffee sector in San Martin that are preventing its smallholders from reaching full potential in terms of quality, competitiveness and sales. Through an integrated technical assistance and training plan, productivity and sustainability of coffee production in agro-forestry systems is enhanced, with main focus on the work services provided by 20 young workers.
