IMPLEMENTING CLIMATE-FRIENDLY COFFEE FARMING IN CENTRAL AMERICA

CLIMATE FRIENDLY FARMING PRACTICES IN GUATEMALA, COSTA RICA, HONDURAS AND EL SALVADOR

  • Project Budget: € 30,000

  • Beneficiaries: 2,691 coffee farmer partners and technicians

  • Partners: 6

PURPOSE

After the successful joint development of the climate-friendly module within the Rainforest Alliance standards in 2010-2011, partners proposed to roll out and expand the climate-friendly initiative in major coffee producing countries in Central America.
By piloting implementation of adaptation and mitigation practices in model farms and groups, this can serve as benchmarks for their neighbors.

  • Provide training to farmers to help them produce climate-friendly coffee
  • Add value to farmers' product thanks to the implemented environmental services
  • Create a market for climate-friendly coffee
  • Ensure a sustainable supply promoting a win-win situation whereby livelihood matches conservation goals

This project was possible thanks to the support of the Rainforest Alliance, ANACAFE, FIIT, SALVANATURA, ICADE and the EFICO Foundation and ran from November 2011 to October 2013.
