Returning to routine after a summer break can feel like a whirlwind. So, let’s catch up! We’ve created an update on our origins to give you a glimpse of what’s in stock and what’s coming in the next few months, making it easier for you to plan your coffee purchases.

CENTRAL AMERICA
The harvest season -stretching from December to April, marks our peak period for sourcing coffees from Central America. Central America consistently delivers high-quality coffees and keeps on innovating in processing and harvesting, adding a very diverse range of flavours in our offering.
Guatemala
Guatemala’s road infrastructure faces significant challenges, particularly during the rainy season, which affects coffee exports. Heavy rains often result in landslides, road blockages, and deteriorating road conditions, making transportation both difficult and costly.
CUPRIMA sources small-holder lots from Huehuetenango and Atitlán, ranging from single-digit bags to blends from producers with more than 50 bags, ensuring our offering list is always well-stocked.
El Salvador
This year’s harvest kicked off early, with El Salvador being the first Central American origin we will receive. We have secured a full container from small producers in Ahuachapán, including the renowned Alfaro family, who have been exporting specialty coffees for generations. The anaerobic coffees this year are cupping incredibly well!
Nicaragua
Our focus is on the Ocotal region in Nueva Segovia, near the southern border of Honduras. The local producers mainly grow Caturra and Maracaturra varieties. Recently, with significant investments in farm and mill upgrades, we’ve observed a notable enhancement in the quality of their coffee.
Costa Rica
This year, Costa Rican farmers have dealt with a reduced harvest and higher production costs. Nevertheless, regions such as Tarrazú/Los Santos continue to produce exceptionally high-quality coffee. Renowned for their clean washed coffees, we primarily source natural and anaerobic process coffees from these areas. We work closely with about a dozen producers, ranging from Terra to Prima category. Notably, Hacienda San Isidro -run by father-son team Johel and Matias Monge Naranjo, won 1st place at the Cup of Excellence last year with a sundried honey process on a Geisha variety.
ETHIOPIA
This year we anticipate improved coffee quality from Ethiopia. The favourable rains in December 2022 and September 2023 have supported excellent bean development. Last year, we observed some defects in natural processed coffees. However, with the drop in cherry prices for the 2023/24 crop, washing stations have improved their control over cherry deliveries and can now offer premiums for higher-quality beans. Despite this progress, security remains a concern -particularly in the Guji region, and banks are facing liquidity issues, complicating access to loans for exporters. As a result, some washing stations have had to close, leading to a significant shortage of washed coffees this year. Our selection will feature coffees from three regions: Guji, Yirgacheffe, and Sidama, ranging from grade 2 to grade 1. And we are more than excited to introduce a new organic certified washing station in the Guji region: Dimtu.
KENYA
Kenyan coffee is celebrated worldwide for its bright and complex flavours. It plays a vital role in the country’s economy as the third-largest agricultural export and supports over 600,000 farmers. However, the sector has faced significant challenges in recent decades. Since the 1987/88 crop year, Kenya has experienced a 70% decline in coffee production due to erratic weather patterns, reduced water availability, rising temperatures, and consolidation within the coffee supply chain. Despite these difficulties, we have consistently sourced top lots from the Nyeri and Kirinyaga regions. Our coffees, which are traceable back to the washing stations, showcase the classic Kenyan profile with notes of black currant, tomato, citric acidity, and tea. The crop for 2023/24 arrived at our warehouse in July, and a few lots are still available.
