LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Tanzania is home to the highest point in Africa. The title belongs to none other than the famous Mount Kilimanjaro. This snow-capped conical mountain is truly a beauty to behold. Mount Kilimanjaro is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. It stands at about 5,895 meters above sea level. It is home to almost every ecological system from rainforest to cultivated land, alpine desert and arctic peak.

PROUD PARTNERSHIP | EFICO X AFRICAN PLANTATION KILIMANJARO

Tanzania is a country renowned for producing some of the best coffee in the world. One of the coffee estates in Tanzania that stands out is the African Plantations Kilimanjaro (APK), located in the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro.
APK is a collection of seven farms named Two Bridges, Lyamungo, Mlama, Kahawa, Lambo, Silverdale and Helena. The farms are managed by Alejandro Galante, a third-generation coffee entrepreneur from a traditional coffee family with roots in Antioquia, Colombia.

LOCAL PARTNER | APK – ALEJANDRO GALANTE

Born in Venezuela and raised between Venezuela and Colombia, Alejandro Galante knows a thing or two about growing great green coffee. When Alejandro travelled to Tanzania, he saw the coffee game and was blown away by the flavours but he couldn´t believe that farm after farm was dying out in the Kilimanjaro region. So, what to do? He leases some neighbouring farms from the local cooperatives, starts replanting, and revives those farms like a pro. And so African Plantations Kilimanjaro (APK) initiates a journey for a positive impact on people and the planet.

Alejandro and his team don’t mess around when it comes to farming. APK has strict protocols for irrigation, selective harvesting, controlled fermentation, and mechanical drying that are simply next level.

And they also have a nursery, a quality control lab and even play with honey and naturally processed batches. APK not only acts forward-looking through education and the development of a local coffee community; Alejandro & co are also working hard on the restoration and construction of natural resources by focusing on reforestation and water management, among other things.
And especially for these sustainable future-oriented long-term locally implemented actions, we at EFICO would like to commit ourselves by making a structural and financial contribution. ‘Enter‘ EFICO FOUNDATION’s latest FLAGSHIP Project ‘KILIMANJARO WATER & FOOD FOR ALL‘.

EFICO FOUNDATION FLAGSHIP PROJECT | KW&F4A

KW&F4A | PROJECT PURPOSE

Implementing an innovative, comprehensive and scalable model for water efficiency and regenerative agriculture to speed productivity recovery, and secure rural water supply through best irrigation and water use practices linked to local water stewardship in 2 farms of the Kyumasha and Fonrwa cooperatives.

Location: Foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, districts of Moshi and Hai in the north-east of Tanzania, close to the city of Moshi, centre of coffee.

Timing: Preparation activities started in January 2023 – Project implementation: August 2023 – December 2025

KW&F4A | PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Seeking to secure supply and new markets, EFICO & APK are committed to realise an impact business model that mitigates risks in the coffee sector while improving livelihoods in Tanzania.
  • Building on their expertise along the coffee chain, from seed to final consumer, and using integrated field practices, the project partners aim to develop ‘Kilimanjaro Water & Food for All’ as a comprehensive model for water management, that enables regenerative agriculture, reduces CO₂ emissions, benefits rural communities linked to coffee and food production and is scalable through the sector.
  • EFICO and APK seek to mitigate productive, social, environmental and financial risks for their operations in Tanzania, while improving resilience in their coffee value chain through the implementation of regenerative and water efficient agricultural systems for coffee and maize seeds in 2 APK farms to restore soil productivity and grant access to water and food for rural communities in Kilimanjaro.

KW&F4A | PLANNED IMPACT

  • By increasing water efficiency and reducing risks along the coffee value chain, living conditions will be improved for 2,700+ families
  • Expansion of the coffee and maize productive area in the project farms, from 81 ha in 2022 to 210 ha in 3 years.
These 210 ha are under best agricultural management and optimal irrigation systems.
  • This will speed land recovery to establish productive crops, trigering the potential to grow coffee and food (maize, sun hemp & french beans) in these 2 farms by 50%, going from 14% to 29% of the total APK's coffee operation, with an expected increase of overall coffee incomes from 8% to 10% for APK and the cooperatives.
  • Such improvements have direct impact on rural employment, income generation and living conditions in the Kilimanjaro area, contributing to increase welfare.
  • This project contributes directly to following SDG's:

KW&F4A | IMPACT & RIPPLE EFFECT

  • directly affected beneficiaries
    • 200 farm staff develop regenerative agriculture practices and water management skills
    • Around 1,200 permanent and seasonal rural jobs will be secured (70% women)
  • indirectly affected beneficiaries
    • 6,000+ families living in the surrounding area who depend on the Weruweru river as the main water source for their crops and households are involves in the water stewardship committees linked to the project
